Fortitude – strength of character

Fortitude – strength of character

5-11 November 2018

Fortitude, strength of character, is something that doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time to build. By focussing on a character quality each week you discover that your strength of mind builds gradually as you strengthen your characteristics through small every day actions.

Each day brings new situations that assist you in strengthening your character through either positive or negative circumstances that you find yourself in. You determine how you wish to respond to what goes on in your life.

While being kind, caring, thoughtful, considerate and helpful is important it is also essential that you recognise when you need to practice assertiveness, courage, confidence, justice and respect for yourself as well as others.

There are times when you need to stand up for yourself and although it is important to treat others with courtesy and respect you need to be aware of when boundaries are crossed and relationships are being abused.

Virtues, also known as characteristics, are like everything in life – they require balance and moderation – so while focussing on a characteristic also be mindful of also focus on the characteristics that you might find a little challenging to bring to the surface. Is there a situation in your life that you need to practice some courage and confidence in that will move you in the direction you want to go in life?

Self-development means constant transformation and growth throughout your life.  Allow the ‘Virtue Of The Week’ to serve as a gentle reminder of who you are, and who you want to be. Contribute by creating the world you want to live in as you are aware of developing your character each week and inspire others to do the same. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Actions to take to practice Fortitude (5 mins a day max.):

  • Every morning:
    1. Read the card
    2. Reflect on what the card is saying to you right now
    3. Have a great day. Trust that at the right time this virtue will come to the front of mind when you need it.
  • Every evening:
    1. Reflect on whether you implemented this virtue today
    2. If you didn’t – what could you do differently next time? If you did – acknowledge it within yourself.
