Service – how are you serving yourself?

Service – how are you serving yourself?

Service – Characteristic / Virtue of the Week

There were so many perceptions that came to mind when I read the first sentence of the Service card – ‘Using our gifts to be of service is the fullest expression of our lives’.

Naturally when you think of ‘serving’ you think about what you do – usually for others – and how you go about it in order to provide the service that you do – this often serves others, friends, family and the wider community.

When you use your gifts to be of service, some of you may find that you are doing what you love and getting paid for it. Using your gifts for good serves both the public and yourself and is one reason why people are happy to be in your presence because you are happy and make others happy too.

There are times when people do not serve themselves well by whinging or backbiting, or evenly openly criticising others. The false confidence to complain loudly about others (including anonymous online comments) are ways that people do a disserve to themselves. They fail to realise that it is hard to anyone to maintain any respect for them, whether they be a colleague or politican they do damage, and even though it can be vast damage the most damage is to themselves.

How do you choose to serve yourself? May you choose to be a person who uses your gifts to serve the world, be surrounded with like-minded people and be content and happy with who and what you are, and continue to become, each and every day.

Self-development means constant transformation throughout your life – allow the ‘Virtue of the Week’ to serve as a gentle reminder of who you are and who you want to be. Help create the world you want to live in as you practice a virtue each week you also serve as a positive example to others and inspire others to do the same. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Actions to take to practice Service:

  • Every morning:
    1. Read the card
    2. If you feel the need take a few minutes to reflect on what it means to you right now
    3. Trust that at the right time during the day this virtue will come to mind and you will know when to act on it
  • Every evening:
    1. Take a few minutes to reflect on how you applied this virtue in your life today
    2. If you didn’t practice it, learn from your experiences by considering what you would do differently next time. If you did practice it then acknowledge yourself for doing so as it increases your self-awareness and self-confidence.
    3. Acknowledge yourself when you do apply this virtue in your life. You will become more self-aware and more confident within yourself.
