Simplicity – Virtue of the Week

Simplicity – Virtue of the Week

28 March – 3 April 2016

Simplicity – Characteristic / Virtue of the Week

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Simplicity

Simplicity – What does this card say to you today?

Simple living, simple food, telling the truth, having order around you – just appreciating the basics in life.

Simple living – when things get tough it’s a great feeling to go back to the basics of simple living and you find that you are simply living – if that makes sense – I know it does to me. Waking up and going for a walk first thing in the morning – with your dog if you are fortunate enough to have one – taking in the crisp morning air and the scenery around you – saying hello to fellow walkers – whether or not they respond – most do fortunately!

Simple foods – organic farm fresh food – nothing tastes so good especially when its combined with outdoor cooking BBQ style.

Telling the truth – this is simple living at it’s best – having honesty in your life in every aspect – being honest with yourself, having an honest relationship with your partner, doing an honest day’s work and getting paid for it – having honesty in the workplace – along with respect and appreciation.

Having order around you – this creates order within you – your mind is clearer, your thoughts are clearer, you know what you need to do and do it and life just flows. Enjoy!

How to practice Simplicity:

For young adults & adults:

  • Put some thought into what you want to simplify in your life and how you can go about it
  • Appreciate what you have and be grateful for it – share your thoughts, especially if it’ll make others happy
  • Observe children playing – really playing – reflect on it

For child care centres & schools:

  • Ask them what they are grateful for in their lives that ‘simply’ happens every day
  • Educate children on what they have in their daily life compared to other parts of the world and recognise that life isn’t ‘simple’ for all – eg. running water
  • Discuss how much simpler it is to tell the truth than lie – discuss honesty, trust & trusthworthiness

For families:

  • Suggest a family decluttering – of bedrooms, family areas, garages or general outside areas
  • Spend quality time with family – have a sisters night out, have a picnic in the local park, or potluck family meal together
  • Play a card or board game together one night – without technology

For businesses & organisations:

  • Reflect on what is simple in your organisation & what is complex
  • Brainstorm on what ‘the mission statement’ means – either as an individual or a team
  • Take care of yourself, your colleagues and your organisation – remember everyone has the same goal
