Appreciation – Small Everyday Things

The small stuff

When you appreciate the small stuff life is good. Have you ever noticed that? It is said that when you practice gratitude, which is another form of appreciation, that what you feel gratitude for grows.

There is so much to appreciate in the world. The world contains so much natural beauty and we need to be mindful of how we can contribute to ensuring it stays that way for future generations.

Appreciate feeling good

When you appreciate things, whether it be people, the environment, the behaviour of people, yourself included, the ability to do something such as go for a walk, listening to music, admire art, have creative ideas, or anything that makes you feel good you improve your positivity which consequently gives you more energy.

When you have positive thoughts about anything your energy rises. When you get excited about undertaking something in the future, and the potential positive outcome, you do not require much sleep when energy levels are high.

Whether it is decluttering your tupperware cupboard, deciding to upsize or downsize your house, catching up with a friend, going to a special event – if you are looking forward to something you will find you do not require as much sleep. They are all ‘feel good’ moments and can be had anywhere.

Workplace appreciation

When people do things for you, pay it forward. I recall a time when working in a high-pressured position we had some unexpected downtime. My colleagues kindly offered to cover for me while I had an unofficial early break which consequently meant I could grab a meal due to the staff cafeteria being open.

I gratefully accepted the opportunity and when it came time for my official break, when an allocated staff member was assigned to cover my role, I quickly grabbed a cup of tea and returned which gave a different colleague the opportunity to go home early which she appreciated.

This meant that I could finally do a good deed for her as there have been plenty of times when she has stayed back to help me due to the nature of the work and not knowing how many people are about to walk in the door requesting help.

Behaviour displayed by all was positive, thoughtful, caring and kind by everyone involved. Yes, some managers may feel it wasn’t sticking to the ‘rules’ however when staff have the opportunity to support one another by giving and taking as the workload requires, it creates a cooperative and caring environment in the workplace – and that is something that money can’t buy.

The balance of Appreciation

Appreciation is a personal thing. You see the positive in people and in situations when you look for them. It is surprisingly never hard to find the positive in something or someone.

Everyone goes through challenging times in their life, every single one of us, however every difficult situation passes with time. You never know what others are going through so look for the good in them and the positive in their situation as it’s often hard to see the positivity in a difficult situation if you’re the one in it – so always be mindful how you affect others and be kind, be kind, be kind.
