Determination – Virtue of the Week

Determination – Virtue of the Week

11-17 April 2016

Determination – Characteristic / Virtue of the Week

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Determination – What does this card say to you today?

What is it you want to achieve today, tomorrow, next week, next month, this year or within your life?

There’s always things we wish to achieve throughout our life – sometimes when times are challenging it’s the little things that we need to ensure happen every day – cleaning your teeth, having a proper breakfast, going for a walk, maintaining a positive outlook. When life is going well there’s still things we wish to achieve – updating things within or around the house, purchasing a new computer, planning a holiday or buying an investment property.

Regardless of what we want to achieve action is required – there’s a quote by Lao Tzu that states ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step’ – sometimes its hard to imagine the outcome however by taking the next step, and the next one, and the next one you’ll be surprised at what you do achieve. Go get it!

How to practice Determination:

For young adults & adults:

  • Think about what you might change in your life and how you would go about it – get help if you need to.
  • Reflect on a child’s attitude – they go for what they want and don’t have any ‘doubts’ that prevent them.
  • Develop a plan and stick to it as best as you can – while also being flexible and not giving up when side-tracked.

For child care centres & schools:

  • Tell them about the story of the Deaf Frog and discuss what they understood from the story afterwards.
  • Discuss how important it is to be encouraging and kind and help each other achieve their goals through their own determination.
  • Read the quote on the back of the card – discuss consequences for both – will & won’t.

For families:

  • Discuss goals – personal & as a family – support each other
  • Brainstorm on what you can achieve as a family that you couldn’t as an individual
  • Take action – for both personal & family goals – ask for help from each other – think about what you can do to help the others achieve their goals

For businesses & organisations:

  • What is the company/organisation determined to deliver?
  • Think outside the square – ‘how many ways can this goal be delivered’?
  • Be flexible in your delivery but focussed on the goal.
