Discernment – Listen Within

What is discernment?

Discernment is the ability to make the right decision, or judgement, by listening within to your intuition and inner wisdom. Discernment is using your sense by being detached emotionally and not allowing yourself to be rushed to make decisions until you are comfortable doing so.

Listening within

Intuition is like a sixth sense. You know the answers to all your problems as they are the thoughts that come into your head. All you need to do is listen and action. For example, yesterday I was attempting to get a lamp from a tight spot, it required lifting, and a thought that went through my head was to be careful of the ceiling fan & light. I ignored the feeling. I broke the light in the ceiling fan. The thought was more than just common-sense and thinking ahead. The idea went through my mind, and I chose, yes, decided, to ignore it because I was tired. Then it took more time to clean up than it would have had I paid attention to the thought in the first place. I should have taken the necessary action which I was too lazy to take at the time. That’s when I knew I should have listened to my instincts. Too late.

Decision making

Making decisions can be made in an instant when you know the decision feels right. But when you are undecided, it takes time. It is essential to distinguish facts from fiction as well as understand how your emotions are affecting your decision.

Different perspectives

When making decisions, it can be beneficial to discuss your options with your friends who are likely to point out angles that you had previously not considered, which are very valid. Seeking different perspectives can often make decisions easier when you find potential outcomes from other aspects.

The balance of discernment

As Paulo Friere once said ‘Reflection and action must never be undertaken independently’. It is essential to take the time to make the right decision so that you can then put your choice into action. If you make a rushed decision, you could waste your time with the wrong course of action. Like me, there will be times you listen and the universe feels like it is aligned and other times when you don’t listen and could live to regret your decision. Whatever you do it is a life lesson, and we all have them so whether it is you or someone else who may have made an error of judgement – be kind, be kind, be kind.
