Mindfulness

A Powerful Tool

Mental health is a common topic in today’s world. Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can help reduce mental health significantly. Practising mindfulness is a practice that has a crucial impact on mental health and emotional regulation.

One of the most meaningful things you can do as a parent for your child is to teach them about mindfulness.

Research has shown numerous favourable outcomes between mindfulness and mental health. The practice of mindfulness reduces stress, anxiety and depression.

Thoughts impact our mental health. As mindfulness is exercised and mastered, it helps overcome negative thought cycles.

Attention disorders, such as ADHD, have also produced increased attention and concentration based on research.

Additional outcomes of practising mindfulness are self-awareness, improved social interactions and relationships and general coping skills that help throughout their entire life.

Here are three (3) ways to help your child understand what mindfulness is:

1. Breathing – pay attention to their breathing and how their tummy goes in and out as they breathe. Focus on their breath and nothing else for a set period. Breathe slowly and deeply.

2. Gratitude Journal – Every night, ask them what they were grateful for today. This allows them to go to sleep with a positive mindset.

3. Glitter Jar – Make a glitter jar by adding glitter to water. Shake it. Watch it settle. Talk about how their emotions and thoughts settle down.

Mindfulness has positive consequences on parenting, for instance, improving parental practices, reducing parental stress and strengthening parenting well-being.

Implementing mindfulness has many positives for both the child and the parent. Some schools practice mindfulness as they know the positive impact on the child and the teachers. Many teachers are suffering burnout, which is at an all-time high.

I like to focus on my breathing before I get out of bed. I used to set the alarm to go off after 20 minutes. However, now I focus on my breathing until I feel that I focused long enough on my breathing without my thoughts wandering off.

It takes time and practice. My days seem better when I have more clarity. Try it.
