Motivation – External or Internal

What is motivation?

Motivation is sought from external and internal sources. You could listen, watch or read something externally and then feel motivated internally. Motivation is a feeling that inspires you to take action and feel an eagerness to get stuck into doing a specific task. Once you take action and make some progress, you then feel a sense of achievement, and happiness, that you are getting something done that is important to you. That feeling then builds momentum and keeps you going.

Who motivates you?

You can easily find someone who motivates you and helps you along your way. You may personally know someone, or it could be an acquaintance, such as someone who comes into your workplace. Check out ‘YouTube’ and search for motivation, and you’ll find a massive variety of options that you could watch and, or listen to. Just pick something that resonates with you at that time. All of us have qualities that you may not recognise well in yourself, although others do.

Eat the frog

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘Eat the frog’? This phrase means do the task that you’re avoiding for whatever reason. Eat the frog. Eat the frog first thing in the morning because once you have done something you have been avoiding, then the rest of your day will be okay. You will feel good because not only have you completed the task you’ve been avoiding, but every job after that is an easy task in comparison. You have already done what you’ve been avoiding so every other task that you action after that is done with joy because you are no longer spending your energy avoiding the ‘eat the frog’ job.

Mindset and actions

You may even discover that the task you have been avoiding did not take as long as you thought it might have. Or that it was much easier to do than you anticipated, or won’t cost as much as you thought it would. Be creative. Think outside the box. Ask yourself ‘How can I (do what you want to do)’, and you’ll find that ideas come to mind that you may not have thought of before. Having a clear mind before you ask yourself questions works best when you are in a calm environment.

Your mindset determines your actions. Your mindset is your thoughts. Additionally, having a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset is hugely beneficial.

The balance of motivation

Feeling motivated is a great feeling. Be motivated about your life but be mindful of being motivated about sharing, or slightly pushing, your thoughts and beliefs onto others. Think for yourself. Allow, respect and understand that others have the right to do the same.
